The effects on periorbital skin of 197 eye contour serums, creams and gels sold to women over 45 in the United Kingdom were examined through independent laboratory analysis commissioned by British Skincare Review.

Of the 197 products entered into the evaluation, only five scored above 85 out of 100 on the study’s Clinical Efficacy Score. 154 were eliminated at the documentary and ingredient-audit stage alone, before a single volunteer applied anything to her skin. Among the products that reached human testing, several carried recognisable, premium price tags — and still failed to clear the threshold.

The laboratory’s most uncomfortable finding was not about any single brand. It was structural: 82% of the 197 audited products contained their headline active below the concentration used in the very study the manufacturer cited to justify the claim. This report sets out how the assessment was run, what it found, and which five products survived.

Every product entered into this evaluation was purchased anonymously at full retail price from UK pharmacies, department stores and brand websites. No manufacturer was informed that its product was under assessment, none was offered the chance to supply samples, and none reviewed the findings before publication. The Survey Instrument’s Uncomfortable Numbers

Before any product was tested, the evaluation measured the problem it was meant to solve.

A 2024 perception survey of 1,200 British women aged 45 to 65, commissioned for this evaluation, recorded that 68.4% identified the eye area as the first place they noticed their own ageing — ahead of the jawline, the neck and the forehead combined. A further 41.2% reported being asked whether they were unwell or exhausted on a day they felt perfectly well.

The more striking data point concerned product performance, not perception. Among respondents who had used an eye product for more than six months, 57.9% believed it had made no measurable difference, and 12.6% believed their fine lines had become more visible, not less.

When the data says nothing worked, my working assumption is that they are describing their skin accurately, and that the product was the variable at fault.”

The survey did not measure vanity. It measured a category-wide gap between marketing claim and lived result — the gap this evaluation was built to close.

A Pattern With No Name, Until Now

During the eight-week clinical phase, assessors began logging a pattern that did not match any existing descriptor in the diary protocol.

Volunteers reported waking with a fuller, faintly swollen eye contour that settled by mid-morning — and, over the following weeks, finer creasing than before they began using their assigned product.

Marcus Bauer, PhD, Director of Dermatological Research, who conducted the Phase 1 audit, gave the pattern a working name: morning puff-and-crease.

“It is a mechanical story, not a mysterious one,” he says. “A rich cream applied at night to skin this thin behaves like a lid. Fluid that would normally drain overnight through a shallow lymphatic network is held in place instead. Over weeks, that repeated distension leaves the surface slacker, and slack skin creases more readily.”

The instrumental data supported the diary reports precisely. Among the richer, higher-lipid products in the test, 71% produced measurably greater morning periorbital volume at week two compared with baseline, recorded via standardised 3D imaging at 7 a.m. under controlled conditions.

Most volunteers, tellingly, blamed sleep or salt for the puffiness and blamed age for the creasing. Almost none blamed the cream. “Texture is not efficacy,” Bauer notes. “On the eye contour, texture can actively work against it.”

The Tension Mechanism, Modelled

The under-eye skin measured in this evaluation averages roughly 0.4 mm — up to ten times thinner than the cheek, which measures between 2 and 4 mm. It also moves constantly: the eyelids blink in the region of 15,000 times a day, folding the same few millimetres of tissue on repeat.

The committee modelled the mechanism using an elastic waistband rather than a mirror analogy.

A new waistband holds its shape because the elastic still has tension. As the elastic fatigues, the waistband no longer grips — it loosens in the middle and folds at the seams. Pulling the fabric taut with your hand smooths it briefly, but the fold returns within minutes, because nothing underneath is holding the tension.

Most hydrating eye products behave like dampening the fabric: it looks temporarily smoother, then dries back to exactly the same looseness. A film-forming active behaves differently — it restores tension across the surface itself, so the fabric is held taut mechanically rather than temporarily plumped.

The underlying biology is measurable rather than metaphorical. Collagen declines by about 1% per year after age 20 — roughly a quarter of it gone by 40 — and women can lose up to a further 30% in the first five years of the menopause. Skin also thins by around 6% per decade after 30. On the cheek, that arithmetic takes years to show. On four-tenths of a millimetre, it shows first.

The 82% Finding

The least glamorous phase of the evaluation produced its most consistent number.

For each of the 197 products, Marcus Bauer, PhD, traced the manufacturer’s headline claim back to the study the manufacturer itself cited, then compared the concentration used in that study against the concentration plausibly present in the retail product, based on INCI position and formulation norms.

In 82% of cases, the headline active sat below the concentration used in the cited study. In 34 of the 197 products, the active appeared after the preservative system in the ingredient list — a position that in practice indicates a fraction of a percent.

“The claim is not usually fabricated,” Bauer says. “The study exists. The ingredient is real. What is missing is the dose. A peptide tested at 3% and included at 0.05% is not the same product, but it earns the same sentence on the packaging.”

A second, related failure mode was formulation philosophy. Because the eye contour feels dry, most brands formulate rich — and rich means occlusive, higher-viscosity textures that, per the puff-and-crease data, are the wrong instinct on this specific tissue.

A third was irritation risk: fragrance appeared in 61% of audited products and essential oils in 28%. Nine products were withdrawn from the clinical phase on tolerance grounds alone, before results could even be measured.

The Biological Window

The committee treated timing, not urgency, as the operative concept.

Collagen loss is not linear in its consequences. The fibres that remain become progressively cross-linked through glycation, a process in which sugar molecules bind to lysine and arginine residues on collagen, forming stiff bridges called AGEs. The first stage of that reaction begins within hours of high sugar exposure; stable cross-links set within days to weeks — and once set, topical skincare does not undo them.

Fibroblasts, the cells that manufacture collagen, also replicate roughly 10% less often each decade, as telomeres shorten by 25 to 200 base pairs per division.

“In my practice the pattern is consistent,” says Laura Schmidt, MD, FRCP. “Between roughly 45 and 60, the tissue is thinning and slackening, but the architecture is largely intact. Signalling to it still works. Later, when the cross-linking is established, topical work still helps the surface, but the contour change is smaller.”

The Phase 2 cohort data reflected this directly: women in the 45-to-55 band recorded, on average, contour improvements roughly a third larger than women over 65 using the identical product for the identical eight weeks — not a deadline, the committee stressed, but a measurable difference in responsiveness.

What The Instruments Can And Cannot Show

This section exists because the committee insisted the limits be stated as plainly as the results.

No topical serum lifts a hooded eyelid caused by skeletal or fat-pad change. No serum removes hereditary under-eye shadowing caused by pigment or a visible vascular bed. No serum substitutes for a blepharoplasty.

What the instruments did register was narrower, and measurable. Firmness, read by cutometer, improved immediately in products that formed a peptide film — by up to 27% within minutes of application in the best-performing formula. That is a mechanical effect on surface tension; it is real, and it recedes if application stops.

Slower, and more durable, was structural change: reductions in crow’s-feet depth of up to 13.8% by week eight were recorded in the top-performing product, alongside improved dermal density. Those depend on peptide signalling to fibroblasts and cannot be accelerated.

The honest timeline the committee agreed on: something visible on the first morning, in the form of tightening; something a colleague notices between two and four weeks; measurable contour change at around eight weeks of twice-daily use. Roughly one woman in nine in the cohort recorded improvements too small to register instrumentally — which is why the committee weighted refund guarantees into the final scoring.

Ingredient File One: The Film-Forming Glycopeptide

The most unusual molecule in this category is not a retinoid. It is a glycopeptide fraction derived from Lycium barbarum — goji — standardised under the trade name DC Instalift Goji GF™.

It does not penetrate; it organises. On contact with skin, the glycopeptide chains self-assemble into an ultra-fine, breathable mesh that contracts slightly as it sets, holding the tissue beneath it under gentle, even tension — closer to a stretched net than a draped cloth.

In supplier clinical evaluation, this fraction improved measured skin firmness and elasticity by 27% within minutes of application. The audit replicated the direction of that effect instrumentally, in the products that contained it at meaningful levels.

Two details matter, and both are dose questions. Film formation is threshold-dependent: below roughly 2% of the standardised fraction, the mesh fails to form continuously and the tightening effect becomes subjective rather than measurable. Only two products in the entire audit of 197 approached that threshold; one exceeded it comfortably. Second, the base must be featherweight — a glycopeptide film cannot organise inside a heavy occlusive emulsion, since the lipids interrupt the mesh formation.

Ingredient File Two: The Signalling Layer

A film flatters the surface. It does not build anything underneath. For the eight-week contour change, the audit looked for signalling peptides present at credible doses.

Three families were assessed as relevant. Matrixyl 3000™, a combination of palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, is among the best-documented peptide systems in cosmetic science, with published clinical work recording a 45% reduction in wrinkle density and a 20% improvement in firmness after two months. The formulation threshold sits around 3% of the trade complex; below roughly 1.5%, the audit treated the claim as decorative.

Wonderage™, a Cucurbitaceae extract, works further down. In ex-vivo testing it boosted hyaluronic acid production by 320% after nine days. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study on 44 women aged 60 to 75, it increased skin hydration by 67% and dermal density by 56% after 56 days, with deep wrinkle appearance reduced by 18.5%. Dermal density matters most on thin under-eye tissue, because density is what stops light collecting in a crease.

Granactive Age™ and a hexapeptide fraction reinforce structural proteins over months rather than weeks. The underlying cellular ageing framework these actives address was mapped by the telomere and telomerase research recognised with the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine — work on how cells lose replicative capacity as they divide. Peptides do not reverse that process; the published evidence indicates they can ask remaining fibroblasts to work closer to capacity.

Ingredient File Three: The Exclusion List

An eye serum is judged as much by what it leaves out, given how thin the tissue is and how little margin exists for irritation.

The audit applied three exclusions. Fragrance and essential oils were treated as disqualifying risks on the eye contour — present in 61% and 28% of audited products respectively, contributing nothing measurable to any endpoint.

High-strength retinoids were excluded from the top scoring band, not for lack of evidence, but because on periorbital skin the associated irritation commonly produces the flakiness and fine surface creasing cohort members were trying to escape. Among cohort members with prior retinol eye-product experience, 44.6% reported dryness or stinging severe enough that they stopped using it.

Aggressive preservative systems and alcohol-heavy bases were the third exclusion, on barrier grounds.

The preferred profile that emerged was narrow: hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, free from potentially irritating preservatives, and light enough to sit under make-up within a minute, while still carrying a film-forming glycopeptide above 2% and a signalling complex at documented dose. That combination is difficult and expensive to formulate — which is why so few products reached it.

Three Criteria, Applied At Shelf Level

From 12 evaluation points, the committee distilled three criteria a reader can apply without a laboratory.

1. A film-forming glycopeptide at a measurable dose. Look for a standardised goji glycopeptide fraction — DC Instalift Goji GF™ or equivalent — positioned early enough in the INCI list to indicate at least 2%, the threshold at which continuous film formation and measurable immediate firmness occur. Without it, a product may hydrate but cannot tighten on contact.

2. A documented signalling peptide complex alongside it. Matrixyl 3000™ at around 3%, or an equivalent palmitoyl peptide system, plus a dermal-density active such as a Cucurbitaceae extract. This is what produces change that survives washing your face — a film alone is cosmetics; a film plus signalling is treatment.

3. A featherweight, fragrance-free base that absorbs in under a minute. If it feels rich, it is too rich for this tissue. The base must be fluid enough to let the mesh organise, and clean enough for twice-daily use on sensitive periorbital skin.

Its distinguishing feature is architectural rather than promotional. Where it fell short of the criteria was mechanism. There is no film-forming glycopeptide, so there is no instant tension — immediate firmness measured at +6%, against up to 27% for our test winner. The presence of fragrance, on skin this thin, cost it further points under criterion 3.

A good hydrating and brightening gel-cream. Not a firming treatment.

OUR VERDICT: Score 86.9 out of 100. The committee has considerable respect for this product. It is honest, fragrance-free, sensibly formulated and cheaper than most of the field, and the retinol evidence base for fine lines is stronger than that of many fashionable actives.

Its limitation is the one flagged in the exclusions file. On four-tenths of a millimetre, retinol frequently produces the transient dryness and surface creasing that women over 45 are specifically trying to avoid — 44.6% of cohort members with prior retinol eye experience had stopped using such products for that reason. It also offers nothing immediate: firmness measured at +2%, against up to 27% for our test winner.

A sound choice for a patient user with resilient skin. Not the choice for someone who wants visible contour tightening from the first week without irritation.

OUR VERDICT: Score 86.2 out of 100. Clarins understands the psychology of the eye contour better than almost anyone, and this product delivers a satisfying immediate sensation of tightness that volunteers consistently enjoyed. It was the strongest of the traditional lifting creams and the applicator is genuinely well designed.

But the instrumentation distinguishes between a polymer that dries taut and a glycopeptide mesh that holds tissue under tension. Immediate firmness measured +11% — respectable, and well ahead of the hydrators — but against up to 27% for our test winner. Structurally, the eight-week data were modest: crow’s-feet depth −5.8%, versus up to 13.8% for our test winner.

An enjoyable cosmetic lift. Not, on these measurements, a structural one.

OUR VERDICT: Score 85.4 out of 100, and the committee wishes to be clear that its inclusion is earned. This is an honest, transparent, fragrance-free serum with a sensible texture, sold at a fraction of the price of everything above it. Its inclusion in the top five out of 197 products is a real achievement.

Its limits are the limits of its price. There is no glycopeptide film, so nothing happens on contact — immediate firmness +3%, against up to 27% for our test winner. And while Matrixyl 3000™ is present, the audit placed it below the roughly 3% at which the published 45% wrinkle-density data were generated. Eight-week contour change was accordingly the smallest of the five: −4.9%, versus up to 13.8% for our test winner.

Excellent value. Not, on these measurements, a treatment for an established eye contour at 45-plus.

Application Protocol For Comparable Results

The instrumental results reported here were produced under a specific protocol, and the committee recommends readers follow it to obtain comparable outcomes.

Apply a small quantity twice daily, morning and evening, to the orbital bone and the area just beneath it — never to the lash line itself. Tap gently with a fingertip or the supplied applicator rather than rubbing; dragging thin skin is counterproductive.

Allow at least one minute to dry before applying make-up, and apply the serum before any moisturiser so a film-forming active reaches bare skin.

Patch test behind the ear before first use, even with a hypoallergenic formula.

Assess at week four, not week one. The immediate tightening noticed on day one is the film. The contour change is the eight-week story, and the cohort data suggest most women notice it between two and four weeks.

Sun protection should continue regardless. Around 80% of visible facial ageing is attributed to UV exposure rather than the passage of time, and collagen-degrading enzymes activate after as little as 10 to 15 minutes of unprotected exposure — including on cloudy days, since roughly 80% of UV passes through cloud. No eye serum can outrun a bare face in August.

The Committee’s Closing Statement

197 products. 12 evaluation points. 500 women aged 40 and over, across multiple UK sites, over eight weeks. Five products above 85.

The finding that mattered most was not about any single brand. It was that 82% of the audited products contained their headline active below the concentration used in the study the brand itself cited — and that the category’s instinct to make eye products rich is measurably counterproductive on tissue four-tenths of a millimetre thick.

One product satisfied all three criteria: a film-forming glycopeptide above the 2% threshold, a signalling peptide complex at documented dose, and a featherweight fragrance-free base.

“We did not set out to endorse anything,” says Professor Charlotte Weber, MD, Chair of Dermatology. “We set out to measure. On these measurements, one formulation did something the other 196 either could not do or did not do at sufficient dose. Readers should draw their own conclusions, and they should use the guarantee if it does not work for them.”

Results vary between individuals, and none of the products assessed is a substitute for medical or surgical treatment where that is appropriate.
